Red carpet road to SOAS
29 Nov 2006

British actress Clare-Hope Ashitey admits she just "fell into acting", but she seemed to have landed very much on her feet as she attended the LA premiere of her film Children Of Men last week.

Clare, who stars as a pregnant refugee who can save mankind from extinction, filmed the apocalyptic thriller during her gap year. In the film she shares the screen with not only leading men Clive Owen and Chiwetel Ejiofor, but also Hollywood veteran Michael Caine and US actress Julianne Moore.

Despite her burgeoning film career, Clare is devoted to her studies and has a place to study social anthropology at SOAS next year. It will not be the first time she has fitted filming around scholarly commitments; she shot this year’s Shooting Dogs during her summer vacation from school.

For information on social anthropology at SOAS, visit the Department of Anthropology and Sociology.

Marshall Scholar selects SOAS
29 Nov 2006

2007 Marshall Scholar, Shanti A. Zaid, has chosen SOAS as the best place to pursue his ambition to enhance people’s understanding of Africa-based religious expressions in the Americas and mend conflicts between religious communities.

The first in his family to earn a university degree, Zaid plans to pursue master’s degrees in social anthropology, and in migration and diaspora studies at SOAS.

“These degrees will help me pursue my doctorate and become an academic professional,” he said. “I will have access to world class libraries and resources, but more importantly, the scholarship will help me to fulfil my responsibilities to the future as well as to the past.”

For information on social anthropology, migration and diaspora programmes, visit the Department of Anthropology and Sociology.
